Brazilian superstar, Marta, consolidated her position as the leading scorer in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after scoring her record 17th goal in Brazil’s 1-0 over Italy. Marta came into the tournament as the leading scorer in history with 15 goals and has now added two more goals to the tally to extend her record.
Earlier in group play, in a Brazil’s game against Australia, Marta converted a penalty to become the first player of any gender in history to score at five different editions of the FIFA World Cup.
Marta recorded her first goal at a FIFA World Cup in Brazil’s opener against South Korea at the 2003 edition in the United States. She went on to score two more goals in the tournament including one goal in a narrow loss to eventual finalists, Sweden.
Marta stepped up her scoring at the next edition of the World Cup in China in 2007. At that event, Marta won the scoring title with an outstanding seven goals. Marta’s superb performances contributed significantly to Brazil’s overall showing at that 2007 World Cup as they earned their spot in the Final game, which they lost to eventual champions, Germany. In addition to winning the Golden Shoe as the tournament’s leading scorer, Marta also won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
Marta added four more goals to her tally at the 2011 World Cup in Germany as Brazil made another run to the Quarter-Finals. At the 2015 World Cup in Canada, Brazil started out by winning all three games in the Group stage. However, they were only able to score four goals in the process (and it in the tournament) as they bowed out in the Round of 16 after losing 1 – 0 to Australia. Of Brazil’s four goals at the event, Marta bagged one of those, increasing her total tally to 15.
Marta would look to extend her scoring record in Brazil’s Round of 16 game against hosts France.
